Jonathan Broadbent – BDS

As well as working as a general dentist at Knox Dental, Jonathan works part-time as a Research Fellow at the University of Otago, and as a Consultant for the NZ Dental Council.

To date he has worked at several different dental surgeries, supervised undergraduate dental students for three years (in clinics and in student research projects), and spent time researching for his PhD in the UK and Holland. Jonathan’s primary research interest is in social inequality in dental health, but his research projects have covered a variety of topics; including gum disease, dry mouth, dental enamel defects, and the effect of behavioural disorders upon dental health. Jonathan has published his work in a variety of scientific journals which include the Journal of Dental Research (the top-ranked international dental journal), and he has travelled to speak about his PhD research in Canada, USA, Ireland, Holland, the UK, and Australia.

In 2001, while an undergraduate student, Jonathan won the New Zealand Dental Association Biennial Award for Research. More recently, in 2007 he won the NZ Colgate senior award in recognition of the quality of his PhD research. Jonathan is a member of the NZ Dental Association and the International Association for Dental Research.

In his spare time, Jonathan is probably at a local Dunedin coffee shop, sampling the brew. Jonathan enjoys tinkering with cars and computer equipment, and also loves travelling. Each year, Jonathan spends a holiday doing volunteer dental work overseas in developing communities.
